Clementine: looking great

Amarok is looking really good these days:

Clementine

Hold on, that's not Amarok! It's Clementine, a Qt4 port of Amarok 1.4, aka "my dreams finally come true", aka "what Amarok 2 should've been". It's functional right now, not quite as fully-featured as Amarok 1.4, but all the major bits are there, and it's being actively developed.

Once again I am amazed at and eternally grateful for the number of choices of media players there are in Linux. It seems like I write a new blog entry every other week saying how great some media player is. The reality is that there really are tons of great options. And this is yet another.

But Amarok 1.4 was special. And I really hope Clementine succeeds.

I really liked amarok 1.4, and I'm happy to see that there is (will be) a port of it to Qt 4.

But, OTOH, have you tried cmus? I find it a really good music player.

Haven't tried cmus, but ncmpcpp is good. ncurses apps often end up being way better than I anticipate.

I tried Exaile as per your recommendation, it is nice, but I still prefer Rythmbox. Cmus is a great lightweight player, I think I might go try out ncmocpp.

How did you actually install it? I updated all my packages, but when I try install Clementine it says Qt4 is out of date. Make it go.

Rythmbox has no EQ and you can't even sort your playlist by album, artist, etc (at least as far as I could see)

That sucks. Hopefully once clemetine gets up to speed it will be a functional, featureful player that I can get behind.

I went and checked my current version of rythmbox, and artitist/track/length/... sorting of the playlist is there (click on the column header), as well as a winamp-like library:

artist 1 | album 1
artist 2 | album 2
~~~~~~~~~~~
track 1
track 2

Which makes it easy to pick whatever particular artist/album/track combo you want.

I also checked about the EQ, and it's true there isn't one out of the box, though an EQ plugin has been in existence since 2007, but is said to be a bit on the buggy side. I found that some sound systems do allow system-wide EQ, though.

I gave Clementine a try when I read this, but it just didn't do it for me.

Give Goggles MusicManager (gogglesmm in sunrise) a go - it is my current music player of choice (as another amarok refugee)
