Ubuntu to Gentoo Again
I've just switched back to Gentoo (from Ubuntu). Gentoo is my mom. Reasoning:
- I can install Perl modules via CPAN and it works standard-like.
- Crazy people use Gentoo, so if you're looking to b0rk your whole system by intalling prototype alpha hardware-accelerated Xorg versions and suchlike, you can have company.
- Configuration is just easier somehow because you have a berjillion choices for everything. It seems like the opposite would be true, but in reality if you know what you're doing, more options = better, less options = severe pain.
- bash-completion. Mmmmmmmmmm.
- Larry the Cow.
- My CPU is nice and toasty warm all the time now.

You've got to be kidding me. After you switched to Ubuntu I waited for like 2 months thinking you'd switch back but you never did. So I went ahead and installed Ubuntu and ran into this: Gentoo Forums - Off the wall.
Finally I got Ubuntu working (with a standard kernel and not an uber tweaked one like I was used to but yet settled for it). Then I had to slowly forget to use "emerge -vp" everytime my mouse clicked on xterm.
Now that I am used to getting my software installed in a jiffy you switch back to Gentoo :x I'm not switching back I tell you. I'm quite happy here. I want to be able to install kde in 30 minutes and remove it within 5.
That's all I have to say.
Btw, [url] not working? I don't know maybe <a href> would do but it's ok.
Oh and things I use my computer for:
Thanks for reading.
Sorry about the comments being messed up. But you're the first comment since I started using Wordpress. HTML is allowed.
Keep using Ubuntu. It's good, I liked it. I just like Gentoo better for some specific reasons. Ubuntu never gave me problems except the performance (which was fairly sucky for heavy I/O; I read a lot of people having that problem on the Ubuntu forums). The other thing is if you ever want to start using any non-standard software, you have to install it via
./configure && make && sudo make installwhich means Gentoo is actually better off, assuming it has a package for it.Don't worry I'm used to having you fix my comments all the time anyway :-p.
You are right. I/O causes a huge problem for me sometimes. I bet if I were able to get nitro|love-sources working with Ubuntu things would work out but all that is far in the future.
I miss being able to have my aMule downloads hash, and limewire spread it's java-ness through my computer and slow it down but still have a pleasurable surfing experience on my computer.
I will definitely stick with Ubuntu for a while. If I do decide to go back to Gentoo I will start with a chroot environment within Ubuntu and go from there! Not going through my previous experience again.
It's fairly easy to switch distro. You can save your whole homedir. If you were switching to a distro that was less "standard" (Suse maybe) it'd be much harder I imagine. RedHat back in The Day had a nasty nonstandard KDE etc.
If you have your homedir on its on partition you could even run distros in parallel. 1 partition Gentoo, 1 partition Ubuntu, 1 partition homedir. But that's a bit excessive maybe.
Maybe the next release of Ubuntu will correct the IO problems.
